Trafford to be site of £290m world-leading recycled paper mill

Elaine Brass
13th January 2010
Spanish paper and packaging group SAICA is to invest £290 million to build a world-leading recycled paper mill in Trafford, near Manchester, boosting the region's and the UK's position as a future low carbon economy.
The mill will be located on a 48-acre site at Partington Wharfside near Partington Village, so as to be close to North West, North East and Midlands conurbations from which much of its raw material will be drawn. SAICA, which is a family-owned Spanish company and international leader in recycled paper and packaging, plans to start construction of the paper mill over the coming months. It is expected to create over 200 new jobs.

The North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA) said it had been working with SAICA for over two years to ensure it built its mill in the region.

"It is a great start to 2010 with one of the world’s most advanced recycled paper mills being built here in the North West," said NWDA chief executive, Steven Broomhead.

Welcoming today's announcement, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said the investment showed great confidence in the UK's economic future and said it was important to the country's low carbon growth. "Both the scale and the nature of this investment make it a great win for both the North West and the UK, the number one destination for inward investment in Europe," he said. "It is a long-term commitment in environmental technology which will be central to the UK's growth strategy."

The investment brings SAICA’s committed and planned investment in the UK to over £470 million since 2007. Then the company acquired International Paper’s packaging business in the UK and Ireland.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the Government’s international business development agency, worked closely with the NWDA and Trafford Council to help SAICA with all stages of the investment process. “By choosing to build Europe’s most advanced paper mill in Britain, SAICA recognises that the UK is the best place to establish a European operation," said UK Trade & Investment chief executive Sir Andrew Cahn. "This shows sustainable business is a strong part of the British economy.”

SAICA has plants across Europe and employs over 8,000 people.

5 Green Products: Greenwashed Recycled Paper Products to Natural Paint Colors Made From Organic Plant Extracts

GREENWASH ALERT!

1.  Small Steps Recycled Paper Products

Marcal Small Steps motto is “Paper from paper, not from trees”.
For over five decades, Marcal has been saving trees and reducing landfill by making its paper products from recycled paper.  Marcal uses paper collected from curbs in residential neighborhoods in cities and towns across America; from the small blue baskets in office buildings, unwanted junk mail, and waste from printers; all in an effort to do something good.

Small Steps makes:
  • Recycled Everyday Napkins
  • Recycled Hypoallergenic Facial Tissues
  • Recycled Dinner Napkins
  • Recycled Paper Towels
Would I buy these products? No, even though purchasing recycled paper products is a “small step”, removing these unnecessary products from our homes is better step for the environment. I shamefully admit to buying recycled paper towels, but I seek out unbleached ones and they last in our home a very long time (except when paper towel loving grandparents visit).  We occasionally buy facial tissues too, but this is pretty rare.  Cloth napkins are so much nicer than paper ones.
Editor’s note:  Thanks to one of our readers who commented below, we were alerted this may be greenwashing on the part Marcal.  The EPA asked the company to pay $1 billion for pollution clean up of a New Jersey river, and the company filed bankruptcy.  Small Steps may be a genuine effort by the company to go green, or it may be simply greenwashing in an attempt to change the polluting image of the company.  Given the company quote above that they have been saving trees for five decades, I strongly suspect greenwashing.

210pnghfDrL._AA280_2.  Derma e Very Clear Natural Facial Products for Problem Skin

Whether you are a teenager or an adult like me that sometimes has blemishes, natural treatments for problem skin are the way to go.  Using Tea Tree, Willow Bark, Rosewood, Lavender, and Chamomile, these products are soothing to the skin while still addressing blemishes and break outs. All of these products are made in the USA.
  • derma e Very Clear Problem Skin Moisturizer: “Derma e Clear Skin 3 Problem Skin Moisturizer is a daily moisturizer that provides a proper balance between moisture and oil, thus preventing clogged pores and bacterial infection while hydrating the skin.”
  • derma-e Skin Care Very Clear Cleansing Scrub: “Derma-E Very Clear Cleansing Scrub 4 Oz. Removing dead skin cells to unclog pores is essential for healthy, balanced and clear skin. This gentle yet effective scrub utilizes Aloe and Apricot Kernel Meal to exfoliate skin. Used once or twice a week, this formula will help draw out impurities, resolve bacteria and stimulate new cell growth for clean, clearer skin.”
  • derma e Very Clear Spot Blemish Treatment: “Unburden your skin of bothersome blemishes with derma ® Very Clear Spot Blemish Treatment. It uses natural extracts and oils to reduce harmful bacteria and pore-clogging oil without causing dryness, peeling, or irritation.”
  • derma e Very Clear Problem Skin Cleanser: “Punishing your acne-prone skin isn’t the answer. derma ® Clear Skin 1 Problem Skin Cleanser uses effective, natural antibacterial agents combined with skin-soothers to reduce excess oil and harmful bacteria without irritating your skin.”
Would I buy these products? Yes, they are priced similar to other natural beauty products ($10-$20), and although I cannot vouch for the claims, when I have a breakout, I am willing to try anything.  Also, these products have low scores on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database ranging from two to three.

workgloves3.  Leather Work Gloves for Children

My son is a little helper. From the garden to the woodshed, he’s out there with us doing all of the chores of country living. We have bought several pairs of cotton work gloves in the past, but these gloves never fit right, get lost, aren’t like Mommy and Daddy’s, don’t last, are not very protective, etc. It seems only fair to give children real tools, like leather work gloves.
Young children want to help you carry garden clippings, clear brush and weeds, and do other work in the yard. Sturdy, well–fitting leather gloves protect their hands and help them grip tools firmly.
Would I buy this product? Yes, I actually did. I bought a pair of these gloves for my five-year-old son and am very happy with their quality.  Plus, they only cost about $5.00.  Of course, if you are a vegan, you would want a cloth alternative.

workbench4.  My Professional Workshop Wooden Toy Tool Bench by HaPe

Might as well continue the working theme! This tool bench is my son’s absolutely favorite place to hang out when playing.
Big building projects call for big workbenches and that’s the idea with My Professional Workshop. The 78-piece set includes an abundance of screws and wood pieces to construct things with the hammer, screwdriver, vice, and ruler.
We’ve reviewed several toys by HaPe in the past, and all of them have been extremely well made and of high-quality.
Would I buy this product? Yes, I actually did. This is a big ticket item (about $100), and as a parent, I have always been hesitant to shell out the big bucks not knowing if it is really a toy my child would play with or not.  For my son, this toy was worth every penny. We’ve had our workbench for two years now, and the interest has not worn off. We have added other tools to it along the way, and it consistently promotes extended creative play.

globiton5.  Glob It On:  Natural Paint Colors Made From Organic Plant Extracts

Every child’s art supply comes with the assurance that it is “non-toxic”, but I have often questioned how true this statement really is; however, I don’t question the toxicity of Glob It On Paints!  This may be one of the coolest products we have reviewed in a long time.  Made from organic plant extracts, Glob comes in powder form that you mix with cold water to the desired consistency.
Finally, eco-friendly paints made from natural ingredients. Created with a focus on sustainability, these water-based paints and pigments are biodegradable.
GLOB™ is made from colors found in nature.  Our botanically crafted products are colored by fruits, vegetables, flowers and spices.
The vibrant pigments in GLOB™ have been used by different cultures throughout the ages in artists’ paints and body products.
Using cosmetic and food grade ingredients, our products are truly non-toxic.
GLOB™ paints are unmatched in quality and environmental synergy.
The colors are truly vibrant, and the paint mixes up easily.  I enjoyed painting with our Glob samples :) .  Mixed up paint needs to be stored in the refrigerator, because they are truly all natural, but you can easily just mix up a little at a time based upon your needs.
Would I buy this product? Yes!  Yes!  Yes!
Disclosure:  The products described above were sent to us as free samples, unless noted differently in the review.  Prior assurances as to the nature of the reviews, whether positive or negative, were not given.  No financial payments were accepted in exchange for the reviews.  The reviews reflect our honest, authentic opinions.

Increase your Brand Awareness with a Paper Carrier Bag

Protection of the environment is one of the prime concerns of all major nations in the world. Immense emphasis has been given to this great need, with considerable appeals going out to business companies to switch to the use of eco-friendly products. Thus to meet this great demand, carrier bag suppliers manufacture the popular Paper Carrier Bag as an eco-friendly product. These bags which are reusable and recyclable have been far better accepted than the common plastic bag. Business companies who have made the switch and now use recycled products have been well-accepted by the society as environmentally conscious enterprises and have eventually gained a good company image.

Bags are now a popular promotional product with many business companies opting to use them for advertising campaigns. A couple of reasons for this choice is because they are economical when ordered in bulk, they offer ample space for advertising, is a useful product with the possibility of re-use as well, and so much more.  When these bags are customised to carry the company’s logo, brand and name they are able to convey a stronger message, drawing the attention of many potential customers and thus generating more revenue.

Unknowingly, a customised Paper Carrier Bag becomes an excellent “ambassador” of your brand when a customer carries this bag around commercial areas. When the bag looks sturdy with strong handles, has an attractive design and is comfortably carried around by a customer with is purchases safely within the bag, other shoppers will be definitely tempted to take a look at the logo. This small glance can bring in a big change to your revenue. When a quality bag is seen being carried around, it also creates a good image and impression of the company. Quality is always vital to maintain standards in the consumer world.

A Paper Carrier Bag is suitable to carry all types of food items, groceries, fruits, toys, clothes, books or any similar products such as these. The paper used for the manufacture of these bags is strong and durable, and due to this it can carry heavy products as well.

One of the reasons for the popularity of this bag is because it is a useful product in a home or office and it also could be utilised over and over again. This creates additional brand visibility each time the bag is taken around. Considering the reasons, advertising with carrier bags have proved to be extremely successful.

Marketing research has proved that the best form of advertising is with the use of promotional merchandise.  Advertising in the print and electronic media involves large amounts of cash just for a small area and a minimum amount of time respectively.  Advertising with promotional carrier bags is far more economical; the message stays longer in the consumer market and is also able to generate a greater income. If you are planning to use carrier bags as your next promotional product, it might be better to consider a recycled Paper Carrier Bag, even though the cost might be slightly higher.

Nippon may get paper to recycle from Victoria area

PORT ANGELES -- Recycled newspaper on Vancouver Island is no longer being processed in British Columbia, and the Nippon Paper Industries USA Ltd. paper mill in Port Angeles is one place it could end up.

After the recent closure of Catalyst Paper's de-inking plant in Port Coquitlam, Victoria Metro Waste Paper Recovery is sending its recycled newsprint elsewhere.

"We have bought paper from them, but probably not for a year, year and a half," said Harold Norlund, Nippon Paper mill manager.

"They had a contract with Catalyst. ... But yes, they've shut that plant down indefinitely, so we don't know how many months that is."

Norlund said the closure of Catalyst mill could present an opportunity for Nippon.

"We may or may not buy from Metro in the future," he said.

"It depends on price, but it also depends on them. They may chose to sell to China as a lot of people have done," Norlund said.

"Certainly, we're always in the business for local available recycled paper."

When the paper was shipped to Nippon in the past, its was carried on the MV Coho ferry, Norlund said.

About half of the 1,400 tons of newsprint picked up monthly through the Vancouver Island recycling program had been sent to Catalyst Paper's de-inking plant in Port Coquitlam prior to the closure.

The rest already was going to mills in the United States, according to the Times Colonist in Victoria.

"It is a bit of an inconvenience, but it is not the end of the world," Doug Stevens, plant manager of Metro Waste Paper Recovery, told the Victoria newspaper on Wednesday.

Metro has a contract with the Capital Regional District that runs until May 2012 to handle all the newsprint collected through the blue-box recycling program.

It is standard practice in the industry to shop around to find out which mills in British Columbia and the western U.S. are offering the best price on newsprint, Stevens said.

"We have been doing it all along from the beginning," he said. "We have a good variety of mills to ship to."

Metro ships newsprint to the Blue Heron Paper in Oregon City, Ore., and SP Newsprint in Newberg, Ore.

San Juan County switching to office paper with recycled content

Brian Rader
SJC Pollution Prevention Specialist
I want it all. That's right, I want it all. I want San Juan County to be responsible to the citizens that pay for our salaries and expenses by:
  1. obtaining office supplies at competitive prices,
  2. supporting local businesses, and
  3. making environmentally responsible purchasing decisions.
Thanks to a new agreement between the County and Island Paper & Supply Company on Lopez Island, for a product produced by the Grays Harbor paper mill in Hoquiam, Washington, we get to have it all! A perfect trifecta of supplies acquisition!
A reasonable person might ask, "What is the big deal? Why don't you just go out and buy some paper with recycled content?" True enough. Large warehouse stores have inexpensive office paper with recycled content. There are also purchasing cooperatives for governmental organizations that offer recycled paper at very low prices. The problem is, I really don't want to send our locally earned tax dollars off-island.
By working with a local supplier, Gerard and Tricia Post van der Burg, owners of Island Paper & Supply, we were able to combine the collective paper use of all county departments to obtain very competitive pricing on an office paper called 'Harbor 40', manufactured by Grays Harbor. Harbor 40 contains 40% post-consumer recycled content.
There are many reasons why this is a good move for the County:
  • We are supporting the recycled products market, which is important because we need profitable uses for all that recycled stuff that we drop off at the transfer stations.

  • In addition to purchasing from our island-local supplier (which helps keep dollars local), we are buying from a Washington manufacturer, which helps to preserve jobs in our state. Grays Harbor currently employs over 200 Washingtonians.

  • The Grays Harbor paper mill is arguably the most environmentally responsible and sustainably managed paper mill in North America. Supporting businesses that conserve resources and work hard to improve energy efficiency is good for the economy and good for the environment.

  • By purchasing from a Washington paper mill, less energy and fuel is used to transport the paper from the mill to the island.

  • The resources that are preserved by switching from 100% virgin paper to a paper with 40% recycled content are not trivial.

According to the Environmental Defense Fund's on-line 'paper calculator,' if the County uses 11 tons of paper (San Juan County's approximate paper usage in 2009), these are the savings:
  • 16 tons less wood (the equivalent of about 114 trees)

  • 36 million less BTU's of energy

  • 10,823 pounds less CO2 equivalents

  • 52,128 gallons less wastewater

  • 3,165 pounds less solid waste
This change represents a concrete action with measurable results. Hopefully, this will serve as a model for other ideas both within county government and within our community. We may not always be able to achieve a trifecta, but we should always strive for competitive pricing, local suppliers, and environmentally responsible purchasing decisions.
